The Swedish Patent and Registration Office has granted myFC a patent for two innovations that form the basis for the Active Power Balancing concept. The patented innovations take advantage of the advantages of each technology: optimal, independent and distributed fuel cell control and active balancing of battery cells. This increases the technology’s performance, service life and usability.
The patent covering Fuel Cell Power Architecture describes an improved fuel cell and battery hybrid system that supports optimal thermal conditions and electricity production. The solution described in the patent makes it possible for each individual set of series-connected fuel cells to function independently of other sets and at their own optimal power point. This solution is now used in ongoing projects and plays an important role in creating modularity and scalability in myFC’s technology offering.
The second granted patent, Fuel cell proactive charge balancing and external supply, combines myFC’s fuel cell unit with battery cells to enable automatic active balancing of battery cells. Balancing battery cells normally entails both a cost and a potential energy loss, but this innovation makes it possible to deliver optimal power without energy loss and extra cost.
– We already use the technology in our ongoing projects. This means that we can simply optimize the distributed fuel cell system by how we connect our flat fuel cell units and thereby achieve the power application’s power and voltage requirements. We also enable active charge balancing of the battery cell at no extra cost or complexity. Both of these patents are important components of our offering of freedom in design, enabling modularity and overcoming known challenges, says Sebastian Weber, CTO of myFC.
The Swedish Patent Office is the first to grant patents for these two innovations. myFC’s global patent portfolio consists of more than 100 approved patents and ongoing patent applications.
